Karen Stollznow

Dr. Karen Stollznow is a linguist with a background in history and anthropology, and is the author of the best-selling book God Bless America. Her other titles include Language Myths, Mysteries and MagicHaunting America, and Not What The Doctor Ordered (forthcoming).

Karen was a researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, where she worked on a project involving endangered writing systems for the Department of Linguistics and Unicode. She is a columnist, podcaster, and researcher who has written about a diverse array of topics, including language, culture, religion, science, and pseudoscience. She has appeared on national and international TV shows, including A Current Affair, Today Tonight, Alicia Menendez Tonight, and The History Channel’s Miracles Decoded.

Karen has contributed to Psychology TodayScientific American MindAustralasian Science, and many other publications, and is a member of the Executive Council for Skeptical Inquirer. She is a Fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, and a Research Fellow of the James Randi Educational Foundation. Karen is a former host of the Point of Inquiry podcast, and is a current co-host of Monster Talk with Blake Smith (aka, Dr. Atlantis). She writes the “Bad Language” column for Skeptic magazine, featuring articles about everything from language learning and Neuro-linguistic Programming to animal communication and mysterious writing systems.

Karen was born in Sydney, and has a PhD in linguistics from the University of New England, Australia. She currently lives in Denver, Colorado, with her husband Matthew Baxter of the Bryan & Baxter duo.
